Explore León with your rental car
Welcome to León, a city with more than 2,000 years of history. Here you can enjoy the best gastronomy and delight yourself with some of the most impressive architectural jewels of our country.
León, one of the nine provincial capitals of Castilla y León, is inhabited by some 126,000 residents (although its metropolitan area has more than 200,000 inhabitants).
The city was born as a provisional military camp of the Legio VI Victrix in approximately 29 BC. A century later, León achieved the consolidation it longed for with the definitive settlement of the Legio VII Germina. After the arrival of the Muslims, León became part of the Kingdom of Asturias. An active member of the reconquest, it became the most important city of the Kingdom of León during the 10th century.
In addition to possessing an extraordinary historical and artistic heritage, the University of León (the second most important in its autonomous community) deserves special mention. The city also hosts the headquarters of the University of Washington in Europe.
Famous people from León include the adventurer Frank Cuesta, the gymnast Carolina Rodríguez, the writer Juan Pedro Aparicio, the photographer Alberto García Alix, the group Café Quijano and the former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
And as if all this were not enough, León is living the festivities in style. On June 24 and 28, multiple activities are held in honor of San Juna and San Pedro. The traditional bonfires are combined with bullfights, parades and musical performances, a spectacle worth seeing!
