Get to know Lugo with your rental car
Welcome to Lugo, a beautiful walled city that will make you travel back in time. Its architecture, its Roman style and its gastronomy make this town a great tourist attraction. Not to mention that it is the oldest city in Galicia.
Intrigued by all that Lugo has to offer? Then pay attention to this brief informative guide to the city that we have prepared for you:
Lugo was founded in 25 BC by Paulo Fabio Máximo. It was known in Roman times as Lucus Augusti and most of the remains preserved from this period are exhibited in the Provincial Museum.
But, undoubtedly, the jewel of this city is its Wall. Declared a World Heritage Site in 2000, it is the only one in the world that preserves its entire perimeter. Outside the city, it is possible to visit the complex of Penas de Rodas and the sanctuary of Santa Eulalia de Bóveda.
Today, the town has about 98,000 inhabitants and holds the title of "La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad" (The Very Noble and Loyal City). Located next to the Miño River, this municipality has an enviable gastronomy. Like the other Galician provinces, the people of Lugo cook to perfection the octopus á feira, the Galician broth, the empanada, the filloas and the freixós.
Visit Lugo at any time of the year, but if you have time, do not miss the festivity of San Froilán, on October 5, and the Arde Lucus. During the month of June, Lugo travels back to ancient Rome for chariot races, gladiator fights and slave sales.
Whether you are traveling here on vacation or on business, you are sure to need a rental car in Lugo. Saying goodbye to the delays and limitations of public transport is easier and cheaper than you might think.
