Why visit Girona?
With the van rental in Girona is impossible to get bored walking around the city. Its historical and artistic heritage is unparalleled but it is true that there are usually no large crowds of tourists. In addition, the city has been distinguished with the prize of Europe 2016 for promoting the ideals of the EU.
If we take a look at Girona's more remote past we discover that the first settlements in the area date back to the Indigetes, an Iberian tribe. However, Girona was not founded until the arrival of the Romans in 77 BC. Today, Girona is a city that has managed to perfectly combine the beauty of the civilizations that populated it.
The monuments and places that have made Girona famous are the following: the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Barri Vell, the houses of the Oñar, the Jewish quarter, the Arab baths, the Carolingian wall, the Rambla de la Libertad and the Plaza de la Independencia.
Girona's gastronomy is full of contrasts as the inland dishes are totally different from those typical of the Costa Brava. The best known and most appreciated dishes are the butters and cheeses of Alto Urgel and Cerdanya, talltendre turnips, futifarras and cassoulets. don't forget to leave some room for some xuxos for dessert!
Many of those who decide to rent a van in Girona are eager to go to the beach. The city is bathed by the Costa Brava, a coastal strip with more than 200 kilometers. Do not waste time and start enjoying the wonderful Mediterranean landscapes with your Autofurgo vehicle.

The inland towns also have their charm so we will talk in detail about a few for you to get ideas of where you can go with family or friends:
Blanes
Blanes is 40 kilometers south of the capital. To get here, you will have to drive along the A-2 and the N-2 for about 45 minutes. This is the gateway to the Costa Brava, one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Don't forget to visit the Marimurtra and Pinya de Rosa Botanical Gardens, Sa Palomera, the Church of Santa Maria or the Castle of San Juan. During its main festival, which takes place between 21 and 27 July, the largest international fireworks competition in Europe is held.
Empuriabrava
Surrounded by the Natural Park of the Empordà Marshes, this area is known worldwide for being the most important residential marina in Europe. You will reach "the Venice of the Costa Brava" in about 55 minutes from the capital, although remember that this town belongs to the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries.
Figueres
The AP-7 connects the capital of Girona with Figueres in just under 43 minutes. This town, which is located in the Alt Empordà, saw the birth in 1904 of Salvador Dalí, one of the best artists of all time. Besides visiting the Castle of San Fernando, the Parish Church of San Pedro and the Toy Museum of Catalonia, you will have to visit the Dalí Theater-Museum, decorated by Dalí himself.
Roses
Visit this town in the Alt Empordà if you want to enjoy some of the best coves in Spain, such as Canyelles Petites, L'Almadrava, Cape Norfeu or Punta Falconera. The municipality is separated by 70 kilometers from the capital, so the trip will take you almost an hour and a half. Here you can also visit the Parish Church of Santa Maria, the Citadel of Roses, the Trinity Castle, the Visigothic Citadel of Puig Rom or the Megalithic Ensemble of Roses. Main routes to Girona
To facilitate Autofurgo customers planning their itinerary if they decide to approach Girona by road we will give a brief review of the main access routes to this city of Barcelona:
- The N-II: It is the national road that connects Madrid, Barcelona and France. The main points of its route that most interest us are Guadalajara, Lérida, Zaragoza, Barcelona and Girona.
- The A-7 or Autovía del Mediterráneo: It is part of the state highway network. Its route starts in Algeciras and ends in Barcelona. It connects Barcelona with Girona but there are quite a few tolls to pay.
- The AP-7 or Mediterranean Motorway: It is a toll freeway that covers the Barcelona-France route. It is also known as E-15 within the European Road Network.
- The C-25: It is the Transversal Axis that connects the interior of Catalonia from East to West. The case of this highway is a bit particular. It has lanes in both directions and runs from Girona-Vic-Lleida.
Due to the influx of traffic on this road, users of vehicles of a certain size prefer to take the freeway to Barcelona, even if it means a greater economic sacrifice and takes longer to travel.

- Parking Plaça Catalunya: It is in Carrer d'Ultònia. Subway parking open from Monday to Sunday. Its price for 24 hours is 30.80 euros.
