Why visit La Rioja?
Because this autonomous community produces the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin, one of the most acclaimed in the world and the oldest in Spain. Most of the towns in La Rioja are dedicated to wine production, as well as part of the so-called Rioja Alavesa. If you have the opportunity, visit some of its vineyards and taste an exquisite wine in any of its wineries.
To accompany it, nothing better than some Rioja-style potatoes or lamb chops cooked over vine shoots. Do not shy away from migas de pastor, caparrones de Anguiano, pocha beans with quail, Rioja-style cod and Rioja-style trout. Cheese lovers should also try the Camerano cheese, originally from the Sierra de los Cameros and with Protected Designation of Origin.
The French Way of St. James, which starts in Roncesvalles, crosses Logroño, Nájera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where it joins the Inland Route. La Rioja has a large number of Sites of Cultural Interest. To visit the most famous, you will have to travel to Logroño, Calahorra, Ezcaray or Nájera. Very important is the Monastery of San Millán de Yuso and Suso, both declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1997.
Get to know the community of La Rioja
Take advantage of the fact that you have rented a car with Autofurgo to tour the Rioja region, a land of wines and beautiful landscapes. Start with its capital, Logroño, without forgetting to visit the four municipalities that we also highlight below.
Calahorra
The AP-68 connects the capital of La Rioja with Calahorra, a town with a population of almost 24,000 inhabitants, in less than 40 minutes. This city, which is the most important of La Rioja Baja, is also the second most important of its Autonomous Community. In addition to its many museums, try to visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Episcopal Palace, the archaeological site of the Clinic and the Circus and the Roman Cloacas.
Ezcaray
Drive your rental car from Logroño along the A-12 and the LR-111 to reach this small town of 2,000 inhabitants. Once in the town, located in La Rioja Alta, you cannot miss the Church of Santa María la Mayor, the Royal Cloth Factory "El Fuerte", the Palace of the Angel and the Chapels of the Virgin of Allende and Santa Bárbara. In addition, you will have to stroll through its beautiful houses after enjoying its great restaurants.
San Millán de la Cogolla
A 40-minute drive separates Logroño from San Millán de la Cogolla, one of the most interesting villages in northern Spain. Although this town is not part of the Camino de Santiago, many pilgrims leave the route to see the impressive Monastery of San Millán, an architectural ensemble that includes the ancient Monastery of San Millán de Yuso and the Monastery of San Millán de Suso.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada
In little more than half an hour on the A-12 you can reach this municipality, populated by 6,300 Calceatenses. The town is named after Domingo García, a religious man who built a bridge, a hospital and a hostel for pilgrims in the municipality. The miracle of the rooster and the hen also took place here, so it is not unusual to see these animals in the Cathedral. In addition to visiting this monument, you should not forget the Exempt Tower, the Convent of San Francisco, the Cistercian Abbey, or its four hermitages. Stroll through its streets and squares paying special attention to its beautiful civil buildings.
