Why visit Oviedo?
Because the capital of the Principality of Asturias is the university, cultural, political and religious center of the community. The city was founded in the year 761, when two monks settled on the Ovetao hill to build a monastery dedicated to St. Vincent. Later, King Fruela I ordered the construction of the Basilica of San Salvador, where Alfonso II the Chaste was also born.
Although it treasures a lot of art, special mention should be made of the remains of the Asturian pre-Romanesque, such as the Cámara Santa, San Julián de los Prados, Santa María del Naranco or San Miguel de Lillo. The Monastery of San Pelayo, the University of Oviedo, numerous palaces and the statues of La Regenta or Woody Allen are still preserved from later times.
In the Campoamor Theater is held every year the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony, the most important awards given in this country.
As a good Asturian city, fabada is its star dish, although you should not leave Oviedo without tasting the bollo preñado, El desarme, the carbayones and its fantastic cider.
Get to know the Principality of Asturias a little better
If you want to know everything that the Asturian province offers, get in your rental van and do not miss these two beautiful towns that we describe below as a small appetizer of everything you can find in the area:
Cabrales
An hour and a half separates Oviedo from the town of Cabrales, known worldwide for its exquisite cheese. To get here, it is necessary to take the A-64 and the N-634 to change to the AS-114 after passing the municipality of Cangas de Onís. Although there are several parishes that are well worth a visit, you will have to take the time to get to Bulnes, one of the most spectacular spots in the Picos de Europa.
Cangas de Onis
Drive your rental van from Oviedo along the A-64 and the N-634 for 70 kilometers, approximately one hour. This trip will allow you to know one of the most beautiful places in Spain, where you can visit, for example, the monumental complex of Covadonga, the Roman Bridge, the Church of Santa Cruz and the Monument to Don Pelayo. If you like adventure, enjoy the Sella River as never before.
